Option A: Binance (or another major exchange)
- Create an account and complete identity verification (KYC). Most jurisdictions require this before you can withdraw crypto.
- Enable 2FA using an authenticator app (never SMS-only).
- Buy USDT with a debit card or bank transfer, or deposit crypto you already own and convert.
- To send:
Withdraw → USDT → Network: TRC-20 → Paste address. Always paste, never type an address by hand.
The trade-off: the exchange holds your private keys. If your account is frozen for compliance review, your funds are inaccessible until the review clears. For quick trades this is usually fine; for long-term storage it is not.
Option B: Trust Wallet (self-custody, mobile)
- Install Trust Wallet from the official app store — not from a link in a chat.
- Create a new wallet. Write the 12-word seed phrase on paper. Do not screenshot it, do not save it in a note app, do not upload it to cloud storage.
- Add the Tron (TRX) network in
Settings → Networks. USDT-TRC20 will appear as a token under TRX. - Deposit USDT by copying your TRC-20 address (starts with T) and sending funds from your exchange.
- Fund the wallet with a small amount of TRX (about 15 TRX) to cover network fees. Without TRX, USDT transfers will fail.
Option C: TronLink (browser extension)
TronLink is the official Tron-network extension for Chrome, Brave and Firefox. Setup mirrors Trust Wallet: install from the official Chrome Web Store, create a wallet, back up the seed phrase offline, and fund with a small amount of TRX before your first USDT transfer.
Making your first transfer safely
- Ask the recipient to send you their TRC-20 address in writing (chat message, not spoken).
- Verify the address starts with T — otherwise you are on the wrong network.
- Send a small test amount ($1–$5) first. Wait for on-chain confirmation on tronscan.org.
- Only after the test lands, send the full amount.
Security checklist
- Seed phrase written on paper, stored somewhere fire- and flood-resistant.
- Never enter the seed phrase into any website, chat, or "wallet validator" tool. Every legitimate wallet asks for it once, at creation.
- Enable biometric unlock (Face ID / fingerprint) on the wallet app.
- Bookmark the official wallet website; phishing clones are the #1 way self-custody funds disappear.
- For balances above a few thousand dollars, consider a hardware wallet (Ledger, Trezor) with Tron support.
Common beginner mistakes
- Sending USDT on ERC-20 to a TRC-20 address (funds are unrecoverable on a different chain family).
- Forgetting to keep a small TRX balance for fees, then wondering why every send fails.
- Copying an address from an old chat and not re-verifying it — malware sometimes replaces addresses on the clipboard.
- Storing the seed phrase in a password manager backed up to a cloud account with weak 2FA.
