Step 1 — Have the right wallet and network ready
Before you can send crypto you need a funded wallet that supports the exact network the recipient asked for. The most common networks for USDT are TRC-20 (Tron), ERC-20 (Ethereum) and BEP-20 (BNB Smart Chain). They are not interchangeable — each one is a separate blockchain with its own addresses and its own gas fees.
- TRC-20: fastest and cheapest for USDT (fees under $1). Address starts with the letter T. You need a small amount of TRX in the same wallet to pay the fee.
- ERC-20: the original network. Address starts with 0x. Fees fluctuate from a few dollars up to $40+ during congestion, paid in ETH.
- BEP-20: low fees, run by Binance. Address also starts with 0x. You need BNB for gas.
For a SafeEscrow trade the answer is always TRC-20. For other flows, ask the recipient in writing which network to use and copy their answer character-for-character.
Step 2 — Get the recipient's address in writing
- Ask the recipient to send the receiving address as a text message — never spoken over the phone, never from an image.
- Confirm the network in the same message: "Confirm this is a TRC-20 USDT address".
- Copy the address using the copy button in the chat app. Do not retype it by hand — a single wrong character sends the funds to a random wallet that nobody controls.
Step 3 — Open the send screen in your wallet
The exact labels vary by wallet, but every send flow has the same four fields:
- Token — pick USDT (or the coin you want to send).
- Network — pick the one the recipient specified. This is the field beginners miss.
- Recipient address — paste from clipboard. Verify visually.
- Amount — type the number. For the first transfer to a new address, this is your test amount, not the full deal.
Step 4 — Send a small test amount
Send $1–$5 first. Every professional does this. It costs pennies and it catches every possible mistake — wrong network, wrong address, missing gas, wallet bug — before you commit the real amount.
- Enter the test amount and press Send.
- Approve the transaction. Your wallet returns a transaction ID (TXID) — a long string of letters and numbers.
- Copy the TXID and paste it into a block explorer: tronscan.org for TRC-20, etherscan.io for ERC-20, bscscan.com for BEP-20.
- Wait for the status to show Success or Confirmed. Ask the recipient to confirm they see the test amount in their wallet.
Step 5 — Send the real amount
Only after the recipient has confirmed the test amount, repeat the send flow with the full amount. Paste the same address, verify the network, double-check the amount, and press send. Share the new TXID with the recipient in the same chat so they can track it on the explorer too.
Understanding fees and gas
Every blockchain charges a network fee (also called gas) paid in the chain's native token — not in USDT. If your wallet says "insufficient funds for fees" even though you have plenty of USDT, it means you do not have the gas token.
- TRC-20 (Tron): pay fees in TRX. Keep at least 15–30 TRX in the wallet.
- ERC-20 (Ethereum): pay fees in ETH. Keep at least $10–$20 worth of ETH; more during congestion.
- BEP-20 (BNB): pay fees in BNB. A few dollars is enough for many transactions.
- Bitcoin: fee is deducted automatically from the amount you send, paid in BTC.
Common ways people lose money — and how to avoid them
- Wrong network. Sending USDT on ERC-20 to a TRC-20 address. The receiving wallet does not watch that network; the funds are gone. Fix: always match the network label in your send screen to the recipient's written answer.
- Typo in the address. One wrong character = a valid but empty wallet that belongs to nobody. Fix: never type addresses; always copy and paste, then verify the first and last four characters.
- Clipboard malware. The address you pasted is not the address you copied. Fix: visual comparison after every paste.
- No gas token. Sending fails silently or drains USDT with a stuck transaction. Fix: keep a small buffer of the network's native token in every wallet.
- Fake explorer or fake wallet app. Malicious clones show a fake "confirmed" status. Fix: bookmark the official explorer and wallet URLs; never open them from a chat link.
Sending crypto for an escrow trade
When you are funding an escrow, the same five steps apply — with two extras. First, always paste the escrow admin's TRC-20 address directly from their WhatsApp message, never from a website link somebody sent you. Second, send the TXID to the admin the moment the transaction broadcasts. The admin will watch it confirm on-chain and unlock the next step of the trade the second it lands.
What happens when people skip this process
Everything above sounds like paranoia until you see what a "casual" crypto send looks like when it goes wrong. The pattern is almost always the same: the sender trusts the other party, skips the network check, skips the test transfer, and pushes the full amount in one click. The loss is instant, irreversible, and there is no support line to call.
- Direct trade, no escrow. Buyer sends USDT straight to the seller's wallet in exchange for a promise. The seller vanishes, blocks WhatsApp, and the buyer's only recourse is a public shame post in a Telegram group. No neutral party held the funds; nothing can be clawed back.
- Wrong network, right address. Seller says "any USDT is fine". Buyer sends on ERC-20 to a TRC-20 address. The receiving wallet does not monitor Ethereum, so the balance never appears. The funds technically exist on-chain, but on a chain nobody is watching — for practical purposes, gone.
- Copy-paste on a compromised device. Buyer copies the real address from chat. Clipboard-hijacker malware silently swaps it for the attacker's address before paste. Because no test transfer was made and no visual character check was done, the full amount lands in an attacker's wallet. This is one of the most common losses in 2025–2026.
- "Trusted middleman" that is not a real escrow. A third person in the group offers to "hold the money" on a personal wallet. They release funds to the seller before the buyer has verified the account, then split the profit. No admin, no on-chain audit trail, no accountability.
- Fake escrow website. A lookalike domain claims to escrow the trade for free. Buyer deposits USDT to the "escrow" address, which is simply the scammer's wallet. The site vanishes an hour later. Because payment was pushed directly (no test amount, no admin conversation), the entire deposit is gone before the buyer notices.
