Server Settings → Members → three-dot menu on the target → Transfer Ownership. Everything in this guide is about what to do before and after that click so it doesn't turn into a loss for either side.Step 1 — Snapshot the server's real state
Buyers pay for what they can verify. Before you accept an offer, prepare a shared document listing:
- Member count and, ideally, weekly active members (from the Server Insights tab if enabled).
- Number of Nitro boosts and current boost level.
- Every bot currently installed, with a note on what each does and who pays for its paid tier.
- Any partnered / verified badge status.
- Any pending Trust & Safety reports (if the owner has been notified of any).
Step 2 — Clean up roles and permissions
Do this before handover, not during. The buyer should not have to guess which moderator role can see private staff channels.
- Remove any moderators or admins who have not been active in 30 days.
- Revoke administrator-level roles from bots that only need message/channel scopes.
- Rotate any bot tokens tied to your personal Discord developer account — the buyer will replace them anyway.
- Kick any dormant staff bots the buyer will not use, or leave a written note listing them.
Step 3 — Payment through escrow
Discord ownership transfer is instant. Once the buyer holds ownership, there is no Discord-side way to reverse it. This is exactly why escrow matters: the buyer's funds must be immovable in a neutral place before you click transfer.
- Buyer deposits USDT (TRC-20) into escrow.
- Escrow confirms the deposit in writing to both sides with a TXID.
- Only then does the seller initiate the ownership transfer.
Step 4 — Perform the ownership transfer
- Both sides on a video call or shared chat.
- Buyer accepts the incoming DM prompt from Discord confirming the transfer.
- Buyer verifies they now show as owner in
Server Settings → Overview.
As the outgoing owner, you retain your admin role by default. The new owner typically removes it as part of their own security process.
Step 5 — Post-transfer lockdown (buyer's job)
- Reset every bot token that had privileged access.
- Kick the previous owner from any staff-only channels once you have confirmed access.
- Review Server Settings → AutoMod rules and integration permissions.
- Change any webhook URLs used by external services — old webhooks keep working after ownership changes.
Special cases: partnered, verified, and monetized servers
Servers with Discord's Partner or Verified status can lose the badge if usage patterns change dramatically after transfer. Servers with Server Subscriptions enabled need the new owner to relink Stripe. Disclose all of this in writing before the trade so the buyer knows exactly what they are getting.
Common problems and how to avoid them
- Trust & Safety strike after transfer — usually caused by residual content the buyer did not know about. Do a search of reported messages before selling.
- Nitro boosts leaving with the previous community — boosts belong to the individuals boosting; if they leave, they take their boost. Do not promise boost persistence.
- Old admin returns — if the previous owner keeps their admin role after transfer and later needs to be removed, the new owner can do it from role settings. Removing the old owner immediately post-transfer is standard practice.
